About Us

Who we are

Designed in collaboration with community partners over twenty years ago, the Family Van is a mobile clinic that increases access to health care and improves the health status of residents in Boston’s most underserved communities. The Family Van's charter is to empower community members through improved health literacy and preventive screenings to live healthier lives, while establishing an environment of encouragement and confidence. Our team is comprised of a diversity of members, from health educators to HIV counselors, registered dieticians to volunteers, as well as other health professionals and partners.

What we do

The Family Van reduces health disparities in Boston by carrying out curbside testing, health coaching and care referrals to individuals in underserved communities. By traveling directly to areas in which the need is greatest and fostering an atmosphere of trust, our program removes barriers to care and improves the health of Boston’s most vulnerable residents. By making preventive services available to those with the greatest healthcare needs and providing an alternative to costly emergency department visits, we save healthcare costs. Our work includes free health screenings such as blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and HIV, offering free lifestyle counseling and promoting health education in various languages. Please visit our services section for a comprehensive list of services available on the van.

How we do it

By meeting people where they live, work, play and pray, the Family Van creates a community domain focused on health that welcomes clients with warmth and without judgment. The Family Van helps clients to achieve better health by providing a variety of preventive services that encourage healthy living, limit the initial onset of chronic diseases, and help clients manage their existing conditions. We aim to strengthen people’s understanding of how to achieve wellness by managing their risks for disease. The Family Van also partners with healthcare service providers, including hospitals, community health centers, and universities, to expand our reach. We also seek to demonstrate the value of mobile care through research and advocacy.
