Learning Module:
Screenings
Please review the following information on screenings and take the mandatory quiz at the bottom of the page. The quiz is only graded for completion.
Many of the health conditions we see on the van do not cause symptoms in their early stages. Screening helps identify health risks and diseases before people feel sick, giving them the opportunity to take action earlier. By connecting patients to screenings and preventive care, we can help reduce illness and improve long-term health outcomes.
What Makes a Good Screening?
A good screening test:
Looks for a disease that can have serious health consequences.
Can identify disease or risk factors before symptoms develop.
Leads to earlier treatment or intervention that improves outcomes.
Accurately identifies who may have the disease and who likely does not.
Is safe, acceptable, and practical for people to receive.
Screening is not the same as diagnosis.
A screening test identifies people who may be at risk for a disease. A positive screening result does not always mean someone has the disease - it means additional evaluation may be needed.
For example:
A high blood pressure reading is a screening result.
A healthcare provider may need multiple readings and further evaluation before diagnosing hypertension.
Wondering what screenings a client on the van may need? Please refer to this table that was created by UCLA Health. The table shows some of the most common health screenings, the age range at which they should be administered, and the frequency at which they should be administered.
Think About This
A 52-year-old client visits the van to get their blood pressure checked. Their blood pressure came back within normal range, but while talking to the client about other health screenings, they mention that they have never had a colon cancer screening.
Question: What opportunity does this create?
Answer: This is an opportunity to educate the client about the importance of having a colon cancer screening and encourage them to get screened. We can offer a referral if needed!
Key Takeaways
Screenings help identify disease and health risks before symptoms occur.
Early detection often leads to better health outcomes.
Screening tests are designed to identify people who may need further evaluation for a diagnosis.
The Family Van promotes preventive health by educating clients and connecting them to care.
